Tell Us A Bit About Yourself... I was born in Liverpool and come from a family whose father was a Maths, english and Law Teacher. My mother was a nurse. My parents migrated from Ghana, West Africa in the 1950s to Liverpool. In my early years after leaving school, I flew the nest and landed in London. higher education had always been calling me, yet I was not ready to hear what it was aiming to teach me. Once we open our minds to higher learning, it gives us a wider vision and thought process. I currently live in Greenwich, London with 2 of my children. | What Is Your Book About? My book, Nubian Minds, is health psychology formulated into 3 topics viewed from a psychoanalytic perspective, which means I look at the under-current or thought processes involved in decision making. The 1st part of the book is called 'The Effects of Sickle Cell on Family Life', here I interview 3 people on Sickle Cell and re-interview them 6 years later. Find out what happened next... Part 2 is 'The Structure of Mental Illness'. In investigate why and how mental ill-health can formulate within different races and what we can do to help with mental wellness. The final part is on 'Myths & Fairytales' in which I view African & Western stories. | Who Is It Aimed At? It is aimed at post graduate students, medical professionals, lecturers and most health & social professionals. It is also for anyone interested in health and wellbeing generally. | What Inspired You To Write It? I was inspired by the fact that there are very few Black writers within the Psychoanalytic Health & Social arena and even fewer Black British writers on these subjects. A wise person once said, 'It's a sin to die with knowledge' hence, I thought to share my vision with the world. | What Would You Like Your Readers To Get From Your Book? A greater understanding on Sickle Cell and how it works within peoples bodies and the effect on mental agility. On the mental health area, I hope others will gain an understanding on why many people from the Afro-Caribbean race are given this label. Within the Myths & Fairytale stories, I a hoping the reader will immerse themselves into the magic of fables. | When Did You First Realise That You Wanted To Write This Book? On finishing my studies in 2001, I was asked to sit on many boards and community groups. I realised that the work I had produced may come in handy to a wider audience, hence small pamphlet books appeared in 2004 and Nubian Minds was fully created in 2008. | What Gave You The Push To Get Published? The knowledge that others will appreciate the steps I have taken towards opening some controversial thoughts on how we currently look after our health issues and how we may see life differently in the future. | Did You Have Any Difficulty In Getting Published? Yes, I crossed many hurdles in getting my work published. Most big publishers want a raunchy read. I can promise a stimulating one. Eventually I self-published. | What Hurdles Did You Face Whilst Writing & How Did You Overcome Them? No sleep for many years!!! My days of studying did not stop after graduation. The need to know about this life we live and also provide a light to health professionals on alternative methods in which some conditions can be bettered - physically and mentally. | How Did It Feel Seeing Your Book In Real Life For The 1st Time? Fantastic! The feeling is joyous and I'd advise everyone to have a go. | Do You Have Any Tips For Our Budding Authors? Know you can do it. There is a book in each of us. You simply have to vision it and then do the work. | What's Next For You? I have now finished my second book, 'Curious Minds'. It consists of 9 essays on social psychology. |
